Bodacious Barbies

By Julia

I was cleaning up around the house this week when I came upon my mom’s Barbies from the 60s. I remember playing with them as a child myself- my vintage Barbie was always the grandma because she didn’t look like the other Barbies in the group. But I never understood why the other kids didn’t like her when she was clearly so amazing to me. She had cool cat-eye makeup and retro outfits and a fantastic hairdo. No one else had a Barbie doll like her. She even came in her own carry case with neat retro illustrations and fonts. She was fabulous.

The illustrations on the carry cases are my favorite part of the 60s Barbies. Everyone looks so fancy! The black accessories case was my favorite- I’d never seen luggage like that anywhere else growing up, so naturally, that added to Barbie’s appeal.

The pink doll case has space for both a Barbie and a Midge doll and many of their clothes and accessories. The possibilities are endless, but the examples printed on the inside of the case are outfits that you could get for Barbie and company. If you look close, you can see Midge has a short hair cut.

Midge came with her own selection of stylish wigs in 60s cuts and shapes- a different look depending upon her mood.

Here, Barbie is all dolled up for a fancy night on the town. I love that the jacket matches the dress; the fur sleeves complete the ensemble.

I also found a leaflet about Skipper in with Barbie’s accessories. Inside, you can see popular looks and outfits that you could get for your Skipper doll.

The back of the leaflet encourages shoppers to purchase only the real deal- no copies for the discerning child. I wonder whatever happened to Midge and Allan?

How about you, dear readers? Have any of you kept or found any delightful vintage toys?

Awwwwww, what a great set! You are so lucky to have these from your Mother…..I always wished my Mom had gotten some Barbies back in the day, but she was a little too old.

Btw, your Midge is actually a Fashion Queen Barbie! 🙂

You’re right, I never had a Midge Doll. I had a Ken doll and I think my younger brother somehow got possession of Ken and all his belongings. Too bad, because it made a great set.

Oh, I loved seeing my old Barbie stuff. There were many happy hours playing with those dolls. They even had outfits that you could by for yourself (Like American Girl Dolls) that would match some of Barbie’s clothes. I had one shirt that I wore until the buttons were bursting off.
