Pleasant Post Cards

By Julia

As a child, I always grabbed some postcards from every road trip on which we went. They were relatively inexpensive and the photography was often much better than I could manage with my “entry level” Kodak camera, including angles I could never reach on my own. Recently, a friend gave us some vintage post cards from our state. The illustrations are of local landmarks, working together with the fonts to transport us back in time to their own era. I would love to have them framed, but they are too fabulous to risk fading. I’m not sure what year these are from as it’s not listed anywhere on the fine print.

This first one is a Michigan map. The roads featured appear to be the original highways, not the modern-day interstate freeways we have now. I love the fonts and colors used here.

The next post card shows a popular bridge in Grand Rapids, MI. Look at the parked cars! So cool.

This image shows a central shopping district, also in Grand Rapids, MI. The shoppers and their vehicles, and the old-style signs, transport you back to another era. If my memory serves, the intersection pictured looks a little different nowadays.

I love the architecture on this building! I imagine buildings like it would have been commonplace at one time.

The foliage in this illustration reminds me of a crisp fall day with some of the leaves turning red. The top of the fountain looks as though it is glowing.

What about you, dear readers? Have any of you come across any vintage ephemera in your summer travels?

I’ve been picking up vintage postcards at estate sales and sending them to members of Congress. I try to match the image to the recipient’s home district. I figure it’s a way to get my messages noticed — the interns or staffers who deal with the mail may pause for a moment if the card is interesting. I’ve had a lot to say over the past year and a half.
