Won’t You Be My Neighbor – Midland, Michigan

By RetroRuth

This week I have a mid-century home that I find really soothing.

This home is located at 3900 Valley Drive in Midland, Michigan. It is four bedrooms and three bathrooms and approximately 3,300 square feet. It was built in 1959 and the asking price is $390,000. It is listed by Park Place Homes, and you can see the Zillow listing here. From the listing:

This amazing Red Warner home has retained all of its original design and flare. Prepare to be awed by the architectural features such as cathedral wood ceilings, edge grain fir closets and built in cabinets, exposed brick walls, windows that reveal the best of the outdoors, brick floors and tile baths. The floor plan and features work equally well for daily living and entertaining. Recently remodeled with improvements such as new carpet and paint throughout the home. The kitchen is brand new with natural cherry cabinets and concrete counters. The landscaping and out door space is almost as beautiful as the inside and the home backs to Valley Park.

Like I said…soothing. The kitchen cabinets aren’t original, but the kitchen is fine. I like the brick detailing. I think my favorite detail is probably the built-ins. I love original built-ins! What do you think?

It is a wonderful home, and so low priced in comparison to California prices. I could move right in and enjoy the house and landscaping .

Just so lovely and calming, but it seems so many of these finer MCM home have such narrow, closed off galley kitchens. I would be wary of any house of this period with interior brick walls. If, as is likely, there is no insulating barrier between interior and exterior, that brick will conduct the cold more efficiently than you might imagine.

What a cool house! Looks like maybe there was originally a barbecue grill in the kitchen that was changed in the remodel?

Stunning. This home has been loved, and I can’t see anything I’d change.

‘Soothing’ doesn’t even come close! This home is so chic and warm to the soul, I’ve already dreamt about how I would furnish it! Those vaulted ceilings in the LR/DR just beg for indirect lighting–imagine how it would look at night! and I love the built-in desk areas of the BR’s. This house was state of the art in `59, and hasn’t lost a gram of charm in nearly 60 years!! Martinis on that rear patio at sunset would go down SO smooth! And the price? A STEAL.
