Pretty in Pink

By Julia

Nothing says “mid-century” to me like atomic starbursts and pink. So when I found a set of pink wastebaskets and a pink laundry hamper with starbursts when I was combing Craigslist, they really spoke to me. My husband thought I was nuts. To complicate things, these starburst-y treasures were about a three-hour drive away from us. Luckily, we had some friends who were making the trip to see their family and the rest was history. We made arrangements to collect them and I soon had some new items to call my own.

My dad had a pair of wastebaskets like these in his office when I was growing up, only in grey. The pink is much prettier.

They were manufactured by Rubbermaid. After a little cleanup, they were ready for work. I never thought I would be excited about wastebaskets, but I just can’t get enough of the starbursts!

The hamper is almost exactly the same shade of pink as the wastebaskets. It’s like they were meant to be together!

The little starburst detail has some nice patina on it.

The border on the top and bottom of the hamper is pretty cool, too. This piece was clearly well-loved, but it is a sturdy material and has many good years of service left.

Even the handles look cool. And I am loving the pink!

What about you, dear readers? Have any of you found any pink gems or diamonds-in-the-rough lately?

At a garage sale I picked up a nice little wastebasket with French Provincial motif for my bedroom. It goes great with my bedroom set. It’s amazing how small touches like a wastebasket can complete a theme when decorating. Form and function at it’s best. Love your new pink treasures, they’re absolutely charming!
