Going Antiquing

By Julia

In between Craigslist adventures, I enjoy perusing antique shops. Sometimes I have a specific item in mind, sometimes I just wander around in case I find a deal. Usually, though, I’m just looking for inspiration from the simple vignettes the sellers have arranged in the store. For this trip, I visited Eastown Antiques in East Grand Rapids, Michigan. The shop is located in a cool old building with a brick store front and creaky wooden floors. Individual vendors contribute to two floors of antique bliss, some of which specialize in mid-century items.

This pair of mid-century step tables have a delightful tile inlay, walnut finish, and iconic legs. I love the contrast between the wood grain and the tile.

This Heywood-Wakefield bedroom set was in near-pristine condition. It came with a tall dresser, night stand, headboard hiding behind, and…

A vanity complete with stool! It was a lovely sight to behold.

I was obsessed with this shelf of Fiesta dishes. I have modern lead-free Fiesta of my own because I love the colors. The combinations of colors, the art-deco shapes of the pieces, and the concentric circle pattern are absolutely fascinating to me.

My next find was a living room set in yellow naugahyde. It was in surprisingly good condition, and the sunny color brightened up its basement location.

The shape of the couch and chairs was fun. It looked like they would just envelop you and hold you in if you sat down. This set’s relatively small stature would make it an excellent fit for apartment living.

What about you, dear readers? Have any of you been antiquing recently? What was your favorite antique store find?

The yellow couch and chairs are fab! Just add chrome arc lamp, lucite coffee table, shag rug, and groovy wall art, you’re good to go!

My latest antique find was an Elvis bust lamp. Bought it, and 2 days later the same antique mall put out another one, so I had to bring him home too so I’d have a pair.

I was pretty psyched! They need a little paint work to match (both were repainted at some point), and I’ve got a pair of shades I’m going to re-cover in royal blue suede. Once done, they will grace the ends of my long dresser.
