The Swag-a-delic Lamp

By Julia

In the process of combing our local scene for Saga furniture, my husband and I stumbled upon some amazing estate sales. We came across many exciting finds, some of which were exact copies of my dad’s beloved office furniture, some significantly out of our budget, and a few that hit the sweet spot of things we needed in our price range. One estate sale we visited was in the home of an architect. He had designed the home and its subsequent additions as his family grew. He had a library dedicated to trade magazines and a whole host of locally-manufactured furniture. There were several items that caught my eye, but one in particular jumped out: an amber-colored sphere lying on the floor of the family room. I was drawn to it like a beacon.

This orange beauty was cast off into a corner. I knew it deserved a home. My home, specifically. It was the last day of the estate sale, so we were able to get it at a very reasonable price. It is kind of heavy, though, so we had to be choosy when it came time to hang it up.

We decided on our three-season porch. It casts a warm glow over our tulip table as we enjoy balmy summer evenings on the porch.

Both the globe and the brass fixtures were in decent shape when we picked it up. I love the way the stripes throw a little texture across the porch as it illuminates the night.

What about you, dear readers? Have any of you found a groovy swag lamp or other treasures at an estate sale?

I had two lights like this in my last apartment. The whole place was decked out in 70s vintage style and I got the best deal on it with only a 5 minute walk to the beach. Wish I would have never moved from that place!

I must confess, I am a swag lamp addict. Well I’m really a lamp addict, but swag lamps are my weakness. If I find them cheap enough at estate sales and garage sales, I have to bring them home. I once sat through an entire 3 hour auction just for two swag lamps I ended up getting dirt cheap. They’re a fabulous way of adding light and interest to a room.

Me too, I can’t pass up a bargain. Plus I like to think I’m saving them from some sad fate at the hands of people who don’t know just how fabulous these pieces are.
