Time Traveling

By Julia

I recently visited Chicago with my family. Aside from the brisk winter weather, we had a blast. We had to sample Chicago deep dish pizza and spent an entire day at the Field Museum. The magic of a city larger than the one I call home never really wears off. It reminded me of some family photos I found from when my dad went to college in Chicago. It looks a little bit different today, but it still captures that same wonder.

These two dapper fellows are my grandfather and my dad. There are no dates on these photos, but I would imagine this was taken in 1957 or 1958. They look almost like they stepped straight out of an early Mad Men episode.

This looks like Adler Planetarium to me. I love the old cars and the mailbox off to the side. Even the street lamps have an atomic flair to their shape. If you visit this stretch of road today, there is a lot more traffic, both in vehicles and pedestrians.

The soft focus on this image makes it hard for me to tell where exactly it was taken, but I love the little cross-section of pop culture we get from the people walking by.

I’m not sure if this photo was taken in Chicago or not, but I loved the tail fin. The ostentatious designs of 50s cars are so cool. I’m picturing this one in a bright turquoise.

What about you, dear readers? Do any of you have fascinating family photos like these?

I think that photo in soft focus was taken from Millennium Park, as it looks like the fountain! Very neat photos. Thanks for sharing!

thanks for the Chicago photos. I worked at 9th and Michigan late 70s and early 80’s. Some of my favorite memories are trips to Chicago with my mom at Christmas time.
