Make-Up Brush Roll Tutorial

By Arleen

Over the weekend, I vended my first ever craft market! I heard about it on Thursday, and I made miracles happen to have a few items to sell come Sunday. I wanted something quick to sew, pretty on the eyes, yet totally functional for gifting. Ta-Da! The brush roll! Not only can this be made for make-up brushes, this can be made for pens, knitting needles, paint brushes, crayons, whatever!

Since the gift giving holidays are upon us, my gift to you a little tutorial to make your very own brush roll!

Pretty Happy with my selection! The raven and the floral fabrics are my own design.

Do you remember this Rose print from October?

I picked up this lovely vintage rose fabric on my trip to Texas this past October. I paired it with a soft black poplin for the lining.

You will need the following list of supplies:

  • 2 coordinating fat quarters of fabric
  • Coordinating thread
  • Rotary cutter, ruler and cutting mat
  • Scissors
  • Iron
  • Ribbon or lace for tie if not using fabric. I used ribbon.
  • Pom-poms or lace for inside detail
  • Tag (if you have one! I am an advocate for artists “signing” their work. This includes sewing projects!)

The Pattern:

Cut 1 exterior fabric and 1 lining fabric of (A)

Cut 1 of lining fabric of (B)

Cut two 18″ strips of ribbon or lace (or prepare your 18″ fabric ties)

Cut a 14″ pieces of the inside detail trim.

All of your cut pieces should look like this:

First you will want to fold your pocket in half along the fold line, wrong sides touching. Iron. Pin the pom-pom trim 1/2 inch below the folded edge. Sew. I used a nice wide stitch. If your trim is more bulky then this, I encourage you to use a zipper foot to prevent the slipping.

Next, make your brush pockets. You can measure out how wide you need your pockets to be by inserting your brush and placing two pins on either side. Usually 1″ is enough. I made mine different sizes starting out with the smallest on the left side and the widest pockets on the left.

Start your seam about 1/4″ below the fold, back stitch past the fold to prevent the seam from unraveling, and continue on to the raw edge bottom of the pocket. You can use dress makers chalk, or a chalk pencil to mark your lines if that is easier. I just counted 5 pom-poms to the left and eyeballed it down.

OK, we are getting close! Now you’ll want to baste on your ties and tag. Make sure that your preferred right sides of the ribbon are touching.

Tuck your ties into one of the pockets so they are safely out of the way of your seam line. Pine the exterior fabric to the lining piece, right sides touching. Start by sewing at the bottom, just to the left of the middle. Sew all the way around at a 3/8″ seam allowance, pivoting at each corner. Stop your seam about 2 inches from where you started. This is where you will pull the fabric through.

Clip your corners down to reduce bulk and get a crisp point. Pull your fabric through the opening and press.

You can see the open part on the top of the picture, which is actually the bottom of the roll.

Top stitch about 1/8″ all the way around the bag, being careful not the catch your ties. You will incase the opening with this seam.

Voila! You are done! I hope you will gift this to someone special, or treat yo’ self to one!
