The Terrific Tulip Table

By Julia

One of my favorite pieces of mid-century furniture is the tulip table. My love for Eero Saarinen’s classic design runs deep, and I always envisioned one of my own. When I got a house of my own, it was a delightfully blank canvas full of infinite possibilities, but I knew one thing: I would have a tulip table. But the beloved table and chairs proved to be elusive. The first hurdle was finding a set with a round base instead of a propeller base like this one:

This chair is a strong contender, but alas, not quite what I was looking for. Other mighty obstacles included a fair price (wowza, some of them were outrageous!) and finding a set nearby. Then, one day we found a round table with four chairs for a great price within a reasonable driving distance. I had stumbled across my unicorn! My elation was short-lived, however. In the process of arranging a time for pick-up, the seller mysteriously disappeared. Did the tulip table of my dreams even exist?

Crestfallen, I pressed on in my search for the perfect tulip table. I went to estate sales. I searched Craigslist. I visited my local ReStore. I thrifted. Finally, my perseverance paid off. There on Craigslist was a post for a tulip table and four chairs with round bases, located even closer than the first one. The best part was the reasonable asking price.

When we arrived to pick it up, we met another couple who was as excited about mid-century modern and retro as we were! Their house was a period-perfect ranch with an original stove and Broyhill Brasilia buffet. They even got out an electric indoor grill that looked like a meat toaster, just to share some of their cool retro collectibles with fellow fans. We loaded our treasure with great care and ferried it home.

Ultimately, we decided the table’s new home would be on our three-season porch so we could enjoy cool summer evenings over looking our back yard. The chairs still swivel and do not show many signs of age. The fiberglass holds up well against the dust and damp that occasionally come through the screens of the porch. The breeze filters in and we sit back and relax.

What about you, dear readers? Do you have a terrific tulip table or an epic journey to find one?

I always thought the chairs like that would be uncomfortable as they are just molded fiberglass with no padding but even with my “enthusiastically rotund” frame I find they are comfortable for relaxing in for an extended period of time.

Wow! Beautiful set! We don’t have a Tulip table here since we have so much Hey-Wake….but if we did have room I would surely be on the hunt for one!

A small tulip table is still a tulip table 🙂
