Won’t You Be My Neighbor – Grand Rapids, Michigan

By MidModMichelle

Alright folks! Hold on to your britches, this one’s a wild ride! While today’s time capsule home definitely has some Frank Lloyd Wright architectural elements, its real je ne sais quoi is in its decade-spanning untouched rooms. The 60s, 70s and 80s are all represented, but if you’re looking for the 90s or 00s here, look elsewhere my friend. So if you love mid-century modern but also love wacky wallpaper, wall-to-wall shag carpet, and carpeted walls- you have found your sanctuary. Thanks to my pals Eartha Kitsch and Shawn Norton for sounding the air horn on this one!

This home is located at 3322 Rickman Ave NE, Grand Rapids, Michigan on a lush lot with lake and woods views. It is a 3 bedroom, 2 bath, 4,552 square foot home built in 1960 that is being offered at $349,000. The listing is courtesy of Andy Drasiewski at Coldwell Banker Real Estate. For more information and additional photos you can check out the listing here. From the listing:

This stunning, one-of-a-kind mid century brick ranch on the northeast side is a must see, displaying character throughout and flavors of Frank Lloyd Wright: a low profile design, an Arts and Crafts style leaded front door, and huge windows (one is 5 ft x 10). The home, with its 2950 sq feet of open living space, is built for entertaining and relaxing. It has 3 bedrooms, 2 full baths, and an 18 x 26 sun room with built-in hot tub and adjoining patio. There are relaxing views of Soft Water Lake and the surrounding woods. Built to commercial standards this Roman brick house was moved to the current location in 1961. It even includes a 15 x 21 reinforced storm shelter! Conveniently located near Plainfield shopping district, Meijer, I-96, and a 10 minute drive to Medical Mile and downtown.

(I’m loving that built-in, and I bet you there are hardwoods under the carpet!)

(Y’allll…. I gotta be honest, I’m not loving this 80s kitchen makeover. Or random 80s light fixtures for that matter.)

(Now that’s what I’m talking about! Pretty!!)

(I love everything about this room – hello tiki bar area- except the wall-to-wall carpet. I mean, in a room with a hot tub? Eeep!)

(What a huge master suite and I love that wallpaper!!!)

(This room is so trippy, but I kinda love it in all its tacky glory.)

(I am completely smitten with this pink bathroom! Except the carpet. In a bathroom? Nope.)

(Oh man, I really like that 60s carpet… but again, in a bathroom? What the?!)

(Yep, I could definitely work with this! Sans carpet of course.)

(I wish emojis were working on the site rn, because I’d use the face with the hands up and jaw dropped. WOW.)

(Judge me if you must, but I am digging that carpeted bar. I bet there were some crazy parties down there!)

So! There you have it folks. Feel free to bestow your appreciation and/or air your grievances below. Ta ta for now!

I love this house with the strength of a million suns! It could use a couple of small tweaks for my taste but I’d be ALL over this one. That party room! Come on!

That basement had me reaching for the wastebasket because I’d never make it to the bathroom in time!! Hoy!! And the “peppermint trip” bathroom??! Take a trip without leavin’ the farm!
