Vintage Simplicity 4703 – Embroidered Western Shirt

By Arleen

I have been hunting for a good western shirt pattern for some time. Finally, Etsy has brought me some good fortune and I found a gem! My honky tonkin’ honey has been begging me to sew him a western shirt that he can wear for gigs, and this is THE one.

I was skeptical at first, as I am rather inexperienced in sewing men’s shirts, however this was a great place to start. This pattern taught me so much. The instructions are completely thorough and every detail is very clear. It makes things like button plackets and colors not so terrifying.

In true western style, I had to throw some embroidered flair. As much as I wish I had a chain stitch machine, all I have are my two hands to get me through. I know maybe 3 actual stitches, but that wont hold me back! Why not give it a whirl?

Some F holes on the front yokes, of course! I traced a printed photo I took and then used my trusted sheet of wax tracing paper to transfer the drawing.

For the back, I folded a sheet of paper in half. I used one side to draw the left side of the design and then flipped the sheet to trace the left side to create a perfectly mirrored image. I transferred my markings into the fabric in the same manner as the F holes.

Embroidery done! Although not perfect, I am completely proud of my work.

The front sans the snaps…

And the back. All it needs now are some pearl snaps and we are all done!

I earned some serious points with this one. Seriously, if you find this pattern or similar, do it! Any dudes in your life will be quite impressed. I do see several circulating on Etsy.

Hey there, Cowboy!

I will most definitely be making more of these. Perhaps a fancy one for an upcoming festival. I’ll make the long sleeve version and tackle those cuffs. You can count on a future post!

Last but not least, I would like to think my fella, Dakota Collins for being a real great sport and modeling this for me. After all, he got to keep a sweet shirt in this deal!

Cheers!

My Mom made Western shirts for everyone in the family, including kids and men. I still have some of them. Her embroidery was prettier than this pattern. Today would have been her birthday, so I was thinking of her anyway. Thanks.

I’m impressed and I learned to sew in high school and college in the ’70s! I still never learned to do embroidery. It looks really classy! Cuffs on sleeves will be no problem for you! That is a real beauty of a shirt. You’ll be taking orders from the band soon!
