Tuesday’s Retro Guest – Sara Says “Help?”

Interesting art, Sara!  Very cool find.  And is your picture “before” you fixed the frame or “after”?  I need to know! 🙂

I bought this picture a few weeks ago at Goodwill for $6. I don’t normally go for images like this, I am usually more into to the kitschy weird 50s pictures like ballerinas and bull fighters 🙂  – but I was really drawn to this picture. I thought it was so cute with all the cherub angel babies! I searched ALL over the web for any info I could find on the picture, but came up with nothing. Has anyone out there in blog-land ever seen this picture before, do you know anything about it? I know it is old, maybe 1930s or 1940s. It kind of reminds me of those old Atkinson Fox prints, but this one has a different look to it. I opened it up and there was no name anywhere so I am at a total loss. The frame is really unusual, it was covered in a plaster/chalkware and then painted to look like wood. The frame was REALLY damaged, you cannot tell in the picture but there were big chips along the sides of the frame and a huge crack in the bottom – along with a lot of scratches all over the wood grained surface,  so I had to patch it and paint over it. If anyone can tell me anything about this picture I surely would appreciate it! Thanks in advance y’all!

That is a beautiful picture. But alas! I don’t know anything about it. However, I think maybe it could be from the Victorian Era where cherubs and such were popular.

Hey, Sara. Great job on repairing that frame.

This is “Spring Fantasy” by H. Fantz.

HOORAY!!! Thanks Kelly!!! I knew somebody would know what this was. I REALLY super-duper appreciate it, thanks girl! You are a genius!!!

    Thanks Sableeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!

Ruth, Kelly, Sable – I guess I should have made it more clear in my post, this is the before frame picture (you may be able to see a small chip at the bottom in the black area). It is really hard to tell in my picture, but this frame is REALLY messed up. I painted the brown part of the frame with Rustoleum Hammered brown paint and then painted a black circle lined with gold on the inner part. I knew there was no way I could really match that original wood streaked look that well, so that is why I painted over it. I should have taken an after pic……Sorry!

I beg to differ, I believe your painting is called “Garden Cherubs” by the Austrian artist Hans Zatzka…

    Thanks for the help everyone!

I did see on this site, if you scroll down a bit,

the top 2 pics on the right hand side are the exact same pics, just that the coloring is a bit different. One is attributed to Hans Zaztka and one is attributed to H. Fantz. At least I am fathter along than I was! Thanks again!

I also have this picture in a different frame and on the bottom it says “Spring Fantasy” by H. Fantz. Found it in an antique store about 30 years ago and paid $60 for it. Would like to sell it, but cannot find it anywhere.
